Generation Kill is a HBO miniseries that follows a Rolling Stone reporter, embedded with The 1st Recon Marines, and their collective experience during the first wave of the American-led assault on Baghdad in 2003.

Featuring Alexander Skarsgard, impromptu singing of your favourite early noughties pop ballads, and sand. Lots and lots of sand.

This is a beautiful series. The cast is incredible. I’m not one for war stories usually. But I loved Generation Kill because it was more of a road trip, gone awry of course, kind of story. These men are fantastic. They were the first troops on on the ground in Iraq in open humvees, wearing forest camo in the desert, with one translator and not enough maps and batteries to go around. I love that a woman was involved with writing and directing and that Evan Wright who wrote the book also wrote episodes. There is no soundtrack or music to guide you through the story, the environment speaks for the series. But there are the moment, when the men sing. And it’s just the sweetest.
